Eine intransitive Relation ist in der Mathematik eine zweistellige Relation R {\displaystyle R} auf einer Menge, die die Eigenschaft hat, dass es mindestens drei Elemente x {\displaystyle x} , y {\displaystyle y} , z {\displaystyle z} aus dieser Menge gibt, fΓΌr die x R y {\displaystyle xRy} und y R z {\displaystyle yRz} gelten, aber nicht x R z {\displaystyle xRz} . Eine Relation ist also intransitiv, wenn sie nicht transitiv ist. UrsprΓΌnglich wurden intransitive Relationen vom Marquis de Condorcet im Zusammenhang von Wahlen untersucht (siehe auch Condorcet-Paradoxon).

Beispiele

Ein anschauliches Beispiel fΓΌr eine intransitive PrΓ€ferenzrelation ist das Spiel Schere, Stein, Papier. Hierbei gewinnt die Wahl von Stein gegen Schere, Schere gegen Papier und Papier gegen Stein. WΓ€re die Relation transitiv, so mΓΌsste aus β€žStein gewinnt gegen Schereβ€œ und β€žSchere gewinnt gegen Papierβ€œ folgen: β€žStein gewinnt gegen Papierβ€œ, was aber den Spielregeln widerspricht. Aus diesem Grund kann die Relation nicht mehr transitiv sein, sie ist intransitiv.

Ein weiteres Beispiel einer intransitiven Relation sind intransitive WΓΌrfel.
